Blacksburg Politics, Part II
So there's trouble a-brewin' at the old middle school. For those who aren't aware, the old middle school closed in 2002 when the new one opened out on Prices Fork. Since then, there's been a lot of discussion about what to do with it. The Montgomery County School Board owns the property, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors controls the School Board's budget, and the Town Council controls the zoning of the property. What a shaft if they turn that property into a Christiansburg-style strip mall... and against the public will.

It seems like the best idea might be the YMCA. My friend Jason and I discuss this topic of change and keeping things as they are just for the "quality" of living over letting the market work itself out. As an economist, I say that if you just let it alone, people will either care enough to pay to keep the strip mall out of there or else they will move, but as we see all the time, economic theory doesn't always work!!

the problem with letting the market work itself out is that you end up with wal-marts dotting the country and nothing else.
if this town counsel strong arms this proposal through, they are the biggest hyppocrites in the world. to get elected on the concept of government for the people only to turn around and meet behind closed doors with developers is disgusting.
