I'm just making sure, but abstinence is abstaining from sex, anal and oral sex both have the word sex in it, so did these people ever actually practice abstinence?

well, that's one of the arguments in the article that the pro-abstinance people mentioned. Two things stand out to me: 1.) How difficult it is in our society for people to control themselves when it comes to sex. It's a powerful force (one's sex drive). 2.) How ineffective the whole abstinance push has been. C'mon - 88% end up having sex anyway and along the way they're more likely to pick up STD!? Something is broken.

I think one of the inferences one can make from this article is that there is a reluctance in the abstinance community to teach safe sex and it's having a negative impact.
